Amendment 2 (Right to a militia and right to bear arms)

Right; The state's right to maintain a militia for it's own protection.

arguments; States could develop large militias that are dangerous to the well being of the union.

Court case; United States V. Cruikshank (White militia men murdered over 100 black men in the colfax massacre during reconstruction. Supreme court left punishment up to states.)

Contemporary/why?; This is not a large issue today.

Right; The Right To Bear Arms

Arguments; Anyone owning guns could lead to chaos.

Court case;District of Columbia v. Heller rejected a ban on the private posession of handguns.

Contemporary; This is a highly debated issue. Some people thing there should be no government regulation on guns whatsoever.
